Caravanning in the Rain: Practical Tips to Staying Safe and Comfortable

Nothing takes the shine off pre-trip excitement quite like spotting rain and wind in the forecast right before you’re due to leave. We’ve all been there, and if you haven’t yet, don’t worry, it’s only a matter of time. In Victoria, especially across coastal and regional areas, wet weather can roll in quickly and change plans fast.

The good news? A bit of rain doesn’t have to ruin your trip. With the right preparation and a flexible mindset, you can still travel safely and enjoy your time away. Below, we’ve shared our top caravanning in the rain tips to help you stay one step ahead of the weather and make the most of your getaway.

What should you check before towing a caravan in the rain?

Before you hook up and roll out, it pays to check the conditions. Rain can change road access quickly, especially on unsealed roads. Check weather forecasts and road conditions each day and be prepared to adjust your plans if needed. Read our blog on towing in the rain for more detailed information.

If roads reopen after heavy rain, they may still be affected by water, surface damage or restrictions for certain vehicles. Take a moment to assess whether your rig and your driving experience are suited to the conditions.

When towing in the wet, slow things right down. Increase your following distance, take corners gently, and approach any water on the road with caution. Driving too fast through water can cause splashing into the engine bay, which can lead to electrical issues and leave you stuck where you don’t want to be.

Being prepared also means having the right gear. Pack wet weather clothing, waterproof footwear, extra food and water, and a few additional tie-down straps. A little extra planning goes a long way when the forecast turns!

Is it safe to go caravanning in the rain?

Yes, caravanning in the rain can be safe with the right preparation. Checking weather and road conditions, driving to suit the conditions, and setting up on well-drained sites all help reduce risk and keep your trip enjoyable.

How do you set up a caravan safely in wet weather?

Once you arrive, campsite choice is key. If you can, ask for a site with a concrete slab so you’re not setting up in mud where your van could get bogged. Be mindful of your position too. Avoid low-lying areas or spots close to waterways and aim for a flatter site to keep your setup stable and well-drained.

Check your entry and exit points carefully. What looks fine on arrival can turn into a muddy mess after overnight rain, making it tricky to get out. If conditions do deteriorate and you get stuck, lowering tyre pressures on both the tow vehicle and caravan can help improve traction.

When it comes to awnings, rain and wind are a risky combo. Always set one end lower than the other so water can drain properly and use rafters if you have them.

Keep a close eye on wind forecasts too. Strong gusts can cause serious damage and if storms are coming, packing the awning away is often the safest option.

Don’t forget your stabilising legs and jockey wheel either. Placing timber underneath helps stop them sinking into soft ground.

Make the most of it

Caravanning in the rain doesn’t have to be boring. One of the best parts of caravanning is having a comfortable space to retreat to when the weather turns.

Pack a wet-weather box with board games (we’re loving Wave Length boardgame at the moment. It’s such a great conversational game for all ages!!), cards, books or activities for the kids. It’s a simple way to turn a rainy afternoon into quality downtime. You can also use the slower pace to explore nearby towns and local attractions between showers.

And sometimes, the best option is to lean into it. Put the kettle on, sit back, read a book, and enjoy everything your caravan offers. When the sun comes back out, you’ll be rested and ready to explore again.
